Sandee Hunt is an award-winning writer, photographer, and digital media strategist based in San Luis Obispo, California. Born in Los Angeles and raised on California’s Central Coast, she has both a deep love for the region and a front-row seat to its particular brand of small-town chaos. Her work blends cultural commentary, dark humor, and a journalist’s instinct for stabbing at hypocrisy until it admits what it’s really doing.

Sandee is a former columnist for The Tribune and former editor-at-large of SLO County News. For nearly two decades, she has worked at the increasingly blurry intersection of journalism, publicity, marketing, politics, and digital media, managing stories for public figures, political campaigns, nonprofits, high-profile crime victims, and brands in the adventure sports and luxury experience industries. All that time professionally submerged in comment sections also gave her an involuntary course in digital-era cultural anthropology: how stories get interpreted, packaged, sold, distorted, and squeezed through different platforms and microscopic attention spans.

Her writing turns that curiosity inward, too, with deeply personal essays about trauma, neurodivergence, parenting, memory, and nostalgia. She has described moving through life as “a raccoon in a Pottery Barn”—awed by all the beautiful things, acutely aware she probably doesn’t belong there, and constantly resisting the urge to rub her flea-ridden ass on a down comforter that somehow requires financing. That’s a pretty good summary of the general editorial perspective around here.

Outside of writing, Sandee is involved in San Luis Obispo’s film festival scene and youth sports, and is studying media arts at Cuesta College. She lives on the Central Coast with her two kids, a Princess Diana Beanie Baby, an obscene amount of Marc Jacobs Tote Bags, and an ever-growing collection of creative projects that tend to start as jokes and somehow turn into entire bodies of work.
